#1 Purple Russian Like the Red Russians, these Purple ones are always the biggest and the bestest. The Russians will always be your biggest bulbs at harvest. They taste great and grow so well here on the BC coast. They are big and beautiful and may even taste a little better than the Reds ;) On average... 6 huge cloves per huge bulb and keeps for 6 to 8 months.

#2 Persian Star Deep Purple Unavailable this year due to crop failure, sorry. Will replace with Filipino or Persian Star. A beautiful garlic with light coloured bulb wrappers and purple streaked clove skins, making it one of the most attractive garlic varieties. The cloves have distinct long sharp points that resemble a star, hence its name. Persian Star is a spicy, elegant full flavoured garlic that has a bit of a bite. Gives a nutty flavour when roasted. A very adaptable garlic, cold hardy, produces very large bulbs. Skins clean very easily, yet stay tight for good long-term storage. On average... 6 to 8 to 10 cloves per bulb and keeps for 6 to 8 months.

#3 Susan Delafield A real favourite of mine that I have been growing for 3 years now... I simply love it! Susan can handle wet feet better than most garlics, so is perfect for us islanders and west coasters. Is always of a good size, too! On average... 4 to 6 big cloves per bulbs and keeps well for 8 to 9 months.

#4 French Porcelain I have been growing this French garlic for the past two years, and both years it has been the very best producer of really great, good sized bulbs. Despite the past two winters being snowy, it has been the saving grace in my garlic bed. If the others are small, this one is big, if the others are big, these ones are always bigger. A beautiful bulb with nice, clean white papery skins and a strong garlic flavour. Super easy to grow, great for the beginner gardener. On average... 4 to 5 big cloves per bulb with good storage (6 to 8 months).

#7 Filipino Garlic Just like the Deep Purple above, the Filipino is also beautifully deep purple in colour and is a variety that we can harvest early in the season Scapes can be left on or harvested, will not affect the size of the bulb. The scapes are less likely to get woody, so for those of you who love your scapes and big, lovely bulbs, too... this is the garlic for you. Earlier harvest, gorgeous bulbs, and great scapes to boot. ** Please note that earlier means harvest in the latter part of June. On average... 8 cloves per bulb. Storage life is only about 4 months though, so use this one first and give as gifts to friends, who will be blown away by the beautiful colour and great flavour!

A hardy Porcelain type that will grow well, keep well, and is lovely tasting. A burnished look to this lovely bulb.

Averages 4 to 6 cloves per bulb and keeps for 6 to 8 months.

#5 Yugoslavian The best of the best. This one I have been growing for many, many years and it never disappoints ... not in rainy years and not in snowy ones. Always gives me great bulbs. One of the finest hardneck garlics on the market for BC growers. A staple in my garden. On average.. 4 to 6 big cloves per bulb and a seriously good keeper at about 9 months.

#8 Red Russians I was able to get my hands on some of the wonderful Red Russians, too. Both the Puprle and the Red Russians will always be the biggest bulbs at harvest... and I cannot wait to see which one I like better! The Red Russian is the staple garlic for BC growers, always grows to a great size and a vigorous grower. On average … 6 to 8 huge cloves and huge bulbs, keeps for 6 to 8 months, too.

#10 Russian Red Rocambole

Russian Red has a strong garlic flavour and a warm sweet aftertaste. Not the same as the Red Russians above!

This variety is heirloom type brought to British Columbia by Doukhobor immigrants from Russia in early 1900's.

Rocamboles are considered by many as being the best tasting of all the garlics, they have a thin skin around the cloves which is very easy to peel.

On average 8 cloves per bulb, stores for 4 to 5 months.

#6 Italian Softneck (SORRY, SOLD OUT!) The braidable kind! The most popular and reliable softneck garlic for us here on the west coast. Is mild flavoured at harvest and then gets hotter as it cures. Softnecks have the shortest growing season. Harvest when first leaf shows signs of browning, so around mid to late June. On average... 10 to 14 cloves of varying sizes per bulb. Is a great storage garlic, lasts the longest of them all.

*Susan, French, Shuswap, and Yugo are all in the same cultivar group (Porcelain). Very hardy and easy to grow.
